Patriot Ledger Friday Nov. 23, 2007    WILLIAMS 30, SPELLMAN 14 - Bishops kick off new era

BRAINTREE - The Archbishop Williams High School football team had several reasons to be thankful Thursday, after beating Cardinal Spellman, 30-14, in the first game on its sparkling new field.  The victory brought the Bishops to .500 finish at 5-5 to close the season and provided a triumphant conclusion to the careers of the senior class.  ‘‘This is kind of what you play for all four years,’’ said senior running back Kevin Pateline of Kingston. ‘‘It was really emotional but we went out there and put our whole heart into it.’’

The Bishops were the first team on the scoreboard, finding pay dirt on their second possession.  After strong runs by Pateline took Williams into Spellman territory, senior David Marx rattled off a 45-yard touchdown run for a 6-0 lead. The Bishops picked up the two-point conversion on a pass from sophomore Matt Mahoney to senior D.J. Haskins.  ‘‘We put out a challenge in the locker room’’ said Haskins. ‘‘and we all came to play.’’   Pateline scored on a 1-yard rush up the middle to help give Williams a 14-0 lead early in the second, and the Bishops never looked back.  More >>>

Patriot Ledger 10/15/07  Archbishop Williams 22, Randolph 0

Archbishop Williams’ Memorial Field should be ready to host its first football game Saturday when St. Mary’s of Lynn makes the trip to Braintree. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.  The Bishops broke a three-game skid by shutting out Randolph, 22-0. Kevin Pateline rushed for 86 yards on 15 carries and returned a kickoff  o 78 yards to seal the win at Braintree High. The defense registered a safety and a touchdown, with senior captain and defensive end Jeremiah Foley scoring after forcing and recovering a fumble in the end zone. Kyle Holmes made 13 tackles at strong side linebacker and freshman Sean Provenzano, his counterpart on the weak side, made seven stops.
Also encouraging for Williams was the first start at quarterback by Matt Mahoney. The sophomore from Braintree was 5-of-9 passing, but more importantly did not turn the ball over. Archbishop Williams stands at 2-3 before playing its Catholic Central League game this Saturday.

Coach Bill Kinsherf hopes a tough non-league slate that includes the likes of Duxbury, Cohasset and Norwell doesn’t get his team too down.  ‘‘I guess we like to play up,’’ Kinsherf said of playing bigger schools. ‘‘I like playing South Shore League teams; they’re a good fit for us.   More>>>

Patriot Ledger 9/29/07  Norwell 18, Archbishop Williams 0

The Clippers didn’t need to throw many passes, but the ones they threw put points on the board.  Quarterback Tom Finkenstaedt went 7-for-8 for 93 yards, with two touchdowns and a two-point conversion. James Long caught a 12-yard TD pass and Corey Himberg caught a 40-yarder for the Clippers’ scores.

Long added a field goal and an extra point to round out the scoring.  Senior defensive tackle Nick Scott (6-3, 280) intercepted a tipped pass.
In other games, Hingham improved to 3-1 with a 42-27 victory at Bishop Fenwick; Walpole beat Milton, 20-7, and North Quincy edged Falmouth, 24-22

Patriot Ledger on line - Cohasset 42, Archbishop Williams 6 -  Cohasset can do no wrong

Said AW coach Bill Kinsherf: ‘‘Cohasset is a very talented, well-rounded team. Their offensive and defensive lines are big and powerful. We faced too many third-and-10, third-and-15s today; we are a running team, and they forced us out of our game.’’  Go To>>

Patriot Ledger on line   Archbishop Williams 8, Millis 6

The Bishops turned the ball over on the 1-yard line in the third quarter to give Millis a 6-0 lead, but David Marx responded with a 45-yard touchdown run later in the frame and fellow senior and Quincy native D.J. Haskins plowed in for a two-point conversion for the winning points. "‘It was very exciting,’’ coach Bill Kinsherf said. ‘‘The next possession we held them three-and-out and then returned a punt for a touchdown that was called back, so we took the momentum.’’

Junior Dan Varasso of Hanover made an interception in the fourth to kill Millis’ last drive.  Thanks to a strong effort from the offensive line, Marx and Haskins combined with classmate Kevin Pateline of Kingston and
junior Nick Querzoli of Rockland to rush for 220 yards  Go To>>

Boston Globe  Football  Catholic Central Large football capsules Outlook

Outlook: The task of rebounding from a one-win season won't be an easy one for Archbishop Williams after losing three-year starting quarterback Chris Costello, but the defense looks ready to step up. Matt McGinley will be the key to stopping the run at defensive tackle and head coach Bill Kinsherf know how important he is to his defense. "He has such a low center of gravity that there aren't many teams that can neutralize his presence," he said. Senior DJ Haskins will step into the role of starting quarterback but he will have a three-headed monster coming out of the backfield in Kevin Pateline, David Marx and Nick Querzolo. "He knows the system pretty well and having the three running backs will help him tremendously."
